Among the most important steps in achieving a satisfying retirement lifestyle is to define your vision. This should begin by compiling a categorized list of the elements that make up your best retirement lifestyle. This step should not be underestimated, or approached lightly. The reason it is so critical is that as you begin to “test drive” various activities, lifestyles, locations and living arrangements, you’re sure to be “dazzled” by at least a few. If you have not carefully considered what is truly important for your best retirement, it becomes more likely that you may make an “impulse” decision which may not prove to be the best long-term fit. Many businesses actually depend on this behavior to sell products. For instance, have you ever noticed that there’s lots of candy, gum and entertaining magazines at the grocery store checkout? These are typically purchased on impulse, without much detailed thought. The same principle can be applied to retirement lifestyle; while the idea of living on a private island may have short term “impulse appeal”, few people would choose the lifestyle as a long term commitment. That’s where having your retirement vision and plan written down can be so useful.

So how to proceed? Your list should begin by being very broad and general in terms of your vision. For instance, try categorizing the type of climate you desire: year-round-sun? Four seasons? Deep annual snows? Other broad categories may include “coastal or interior”, “city, town or suburb”, “proximity to family” and “transportation needs”.

Try to broadly identify what you most enjoy, and the setting in which you enjoy these things. Actually writing or typing a list helps to clarify and prioritize what it is you really want in your retirement. . Be sure that your list is written in positive terms—your “do wants”, not your “don’t wants”. Think about how important each item is when compared to the others, and whether some of your wants might exclude some of the others- this will help show areas you may have to prioritize and compromise to get your best outcome.

Every list will be unique, so there’s no right or wrong way to do it. The important thing is that you MAKE THE LIST. Because that’s the first step in defining your personal best retirement…
